五O年代初，飛官孫漢生與妻子皖平及女兒小立、小周過著幸福的日子。一個深秋午後，漢生與皖平突然因通匪罪名被捕。小立寄人籬下，小周則由父親好友丁叔收養。兩姊妹從鄰居那裡聽說，父親被捕是因為丁叔暗戀母親而密謀這一切。這段期間，小周與同學劉霞君結為好友，常上劉家玩耍，劉伯母雖貴為將軍夫人，內心卻竄動著革命思想，還曾帶皖平加入被視為反動組織的青年讀書會。時光荏苒，皖平出獄了，然後如流言所料，和丁叔結了婚。同樣是一個平靜的午後，彷彿時光倒流般，漢生回來了……。秘密，就像一個塵封深鎖的盒子，在那個如夢似幻的午後，剎那間被掀了開來。
It happened during the period called "White Terror". One autumn afternoon, two sisters came from school to find that their parents arrested, accused of being Communist spies. The incident unravels the tale of the air force officer father, the devoted mother, a mysterious scar-faced bureaucrat and a general's wife. Their lives and loves intertwined until everything erupts in a rhapsody.
