 雖然《切》上、下兩部電影導演都親自掌鏡並用最新的Red-One數位攝影拍攝，《切：39歲的告別信》史蒂芬索德柏卻選擇回歸古典劇情電影敘事，來描述切格瓦拉率領游擊隊直至走向生命終端的故事。電影中切格瓦拉在革命理念上，與昔日同路卡斯楚漸行漸遠，兩人產生無可彌補的歧異。1965年，切格瓦拉放棄古巴公民身份，祕密飛往非洲剛果，爾後前往玻利維亞，與當地志願軍組成戰鬥游擊隊，繼續策動共產革命。1967年，寡不敵眾的切格瓦拉及其黨羽，在美國支持René Barrientos政權策動的軍事圍剿行動中遭逮捕、處死。然而，時至今日，切格瓦拉仍是第三世界共產主義及西方國家左翼運動的精神象徵。

After the Cuban Revolution, Che is at the height of his fame and power. Then he disappears, re-emerging incognito in Bolivia, where he organizes a small group of Cuban comrades and Bolivian recruits to start the great Latin American Revolution. The story of the Bolivian campaign is a tale of tenacity, sacrifice, idealism, and of guerrilla warfare that fails and brought Che to his death.
